Balanced funds seek to maximise the appreciation of funds over the medium to long term investment horizon by investing in a mixed portfolio of individual asset classes - money market instruments, bonds and equities. The equity portion of the mixed fund portfolio is designed to provide significant appreciation of the investment above the level achieved by bonds and money market instruments in the event of a rising equity market. The conservative portion of the commingled fund portfolio, consisting of money market instruments and bonds, provides risk mitigation for equity markets in the event of adverse developments and stabilizes the fund's returns.
